How to Install an Icon Theme on Windows 11 with Windhawk (No System File Editing!)
May 19, 2026If you've installed a beautiful custom icon theme — maybe from Cryo64 or Oh My Icons — you've probably noticed that Windows 11 and Windows 10 don't give you an obvious way to adjust how far apart those icons sit on your desktop. Too close together and everything feels cramped. Too far apart and it looks like your icons are hiding from each other!
Don't worry — we've got you covered. In this guide, we'll walk you through two easy methods to change desktop icon spacing in Windows 11 and Windows 10: one using the built-in Registry Editor, and one using the fantastic free tool Winaero Tweaker. Both methods work great, so pick whichever feels most comfortable for you.
Ready to make your desktop look as sharp as your icon pack? Let's go! 🚀
Why Icon Spacing Matters for Custom Themes
When you apply a high-quality icon pack, every detail counts. The spacing between your desktop icons is part of the visual rhythm of your whole setup. Tighter spacing can feel modern and minimalist; wider spacing gives each icon room to breathe and really show off its design.
Unlike Windows 7, Windows 10 and Windows 11 removed the desktop icon spacing slider from the Display Settings panel. That means you need to dig a little deeper — but it's still totally doable, even for beginners.
Method 1 — Change Desktop Icon Spacing via Registry Editor
This method works on both Windows 11 and Windows 10. It involves editing two values in the Windows Registry. Don't let that scare you — we'll walk through every step.
Step 1 — Open the Registry Editor
Press Win + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog. Type regedit and press Enter (or click OK). If Windows asks for permission, click Yes.
Step 2 — Navigate to the WindowMetrics Key
In Registry Editor, navigate to this path (you can paste it directly into the address bar at the top):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
Step 3 — Edit IconSpacing (Horizontal)
On the right panel, find the value called IconSpacing and double-click it. This controls the horizontal distance between your desktop icons.
The default value is -1125, which equals roughly 75 pixels of spacing. To change it, replace this number with a new negative value. The rule is simple:
- More negative = more spacing (e.g.,
-1500gives wider gaps) - Less negative = tighter spacing (e.g.,
-900pulls icons closer) - Valid range:
-480(tightest) to-2730(widest)
Step 4 — Edit IconVerticalSpacing (Vertical)
Now find the value called IconVerticalSpacing and double-click it. This controls the vertical distance between icon rows. It uses the same value system — change it to match your horizontal spacing, or set it differently for an intentionally asymmetric layout.
Step 5 — Restart Your Computer
Registry changes to icon spacing only take effect after a full restart (not just signing out). Save your work, restart Windows, and enjoy your newly spaced icons!
Method 2 — Change Icon Spacing with Winaero Tweaker (Easier!)
If editing the Registry sounds a bit intimidating, Winaero Tweaker is the perfect alternative. It's a free, trusted Windows customization tool that lets you adjust icon spacing using simple sliders — no registry diving required.
Step 1 — Download and Install Winaero Tweaker
Head over to the Winaero Tweaker website and download the latest version. Install it like any normal Windows application.
Step 2 — Find the Desktop Icon Spacing Option
Open Winaero Tweaker. In the left panel, look for Desktop → Desktop Icon Size and Spacing (the exact label may vary slightly by version). Click on it.
Step 3 — Adjust the Sliders
You'll see two sliders:
- Horizontal spacing — drag right to add more space between columns
- Vertical spacing — drag right to add more space between rows
The values are shown in pixels, which makes it much more intuitive than the negative registry numbers. The default is 75px for both. We recommend starting around 90–110px for larger icon packs (256×256 or 512×512 icons).
Step 4 — Apply and Restart
Click Apply Changes (or the equivalent button in your version) and restart Windows. Just like with the Registry method, a full restart is needed for the changes to show up on your desktop.
Recommended Spacing Values for Custom Icon Themes
Not sure where to start? Here's a quick reference based on icon size:
| Icon Size | Recommended Spacing (px) | Registry Value |
|---|---|---|
| 32×32 (small) | 60–75px | -900 to -1125 |
| 48×48 (default) | 75–90px | -1125 to -1350 |
| 64×64 (medium) | 90–110px | -1350 to -1650 |
| 128×128 or larger | 120–150px | -1800 to -2250 |
These are starting points — experiment until it feels right for your setup!
