Our History: From a Small Studio in 2004 to a Global 3D Icon Design Studio
Cryo64 began in 2004 as a small 3D icon design studio founded by digital artist Dario Arnaez. Working in Autodesk 3ds Max, Dario created what is widely recognized as the first-ever 3D icon theme built entirely in 3D software — a project that would go on to define an entire category of desktop customization.
Before Cryo64 existed, Dario founded render4ever, a community built for 3D professionals to share their work and grow together. One day, he proposed something new to the group: creating the very first 3D icon theme, together. The response was warm but not eager — everyone agreed it was a great idea, but everyone was too deep in their own projects to commit. That quiet "no" became the spark. Dario decided to build it himself, no matter how long it took.
The name came almost by accident. Inspired by a scene from Terminator 2, the word "Cryo" stuck — and Cryo64 was born.
Growing Up on WinCustomize and DeviantArt
Cryo64's early growth happened on the platforms that defined the 2000s desktop customization scene: WinCustomize and DeviantArt. Featured and downloaded by thousands of Windows and Mac users across both communities, Cryo64's icon themes, wallpapers, and cursors turned a one-person experiment into one of the most recognized names in digital customization — reaching fans in over 81 countries in the years that followed.
A Personal Promise That Became a Series
Somewhere along the way, making icon themes became more than a craft for Dario — it became a personal commitment. What started as a promise to complete seven themes grew into eight, since eight has always been a number that symbolizes infinity to him. That commitment took shape as a series of themes inspired by titles from the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Levit, Ageo, Colossus, Corinthia, Apocalypsis, and Xion — each one a chapter in Cryo64's story, several of which are still part of the collection today.
From One Icon Theme to a Global Studio
What started as a single theme grew into a full catalog of 3D icons, wallpapers, cursors, and screensavers for Windows and Mac. Today, Cryo64 operates under Arnaez Studios and works alongside OhMyIcons to keep expanding what a customized desktop can look like — still built on the same idea that started it all in 2004: your screen should feel as alive as you do.
